Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Ultrafine Quaternary Al-Cu-Si-Mg Eutectic Alloy

The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of quaternary Al-Cu-Si-Mg eutectic alloy prepared via arc melting suction casting were studied. This exhibits a single endothermic DSC peak with temperature 509 °C upon heating, suggesting reaction. cast consisted four phases, ?-Al, Al2Cu (?), Si Al4Cu2Mg8Si7 (Q), in the cells also nano-scale anomalous intercellular regions. show different morphologies parts sample. Well-defined orientation relationships between Al2Cu, Q phases found cell centres, while decoupled growth phase occurred at boundaries. bimodal excellent compressive properties, including yield strength 835 ± 35 MPa, fracture ~1 GPa strain 4.7 1.1%. high is attributed to combination refined structure strengthening from multiple hard phases.
